USB type C is the port that will be the future of many phones, laptops and many devices. We have seen Apple embracing it as the only port in the new MacBook Pro and also chromebook pixel. Nokia android tablet the N1 has it and now Oneplus has revealed that their next flagship will be featuring the USB type C.
What is actually USB type C???
- Slim and sleek connector tailored to fit mobile device product designs, yet robust enough for laptops and tablets
- Features reversible plug orientation and cable direction.
- Supports scalable power and performance to future-proof your solution
The type C ports is small as micro USB on phones and will be capable of large data and power transfer as of larger ones, which means that the future laptops and phones will have same size and same port for USB transfers. The shape of the port will allow it to fit in small devices and also larger ones with its high capabilities.
The USB type C is nothing more than the shape which makes it REVERSIBLE and that we can plug it in correctly each and every time. This USB type C is compatible with USB 2.0, 3.0 and the latest USB 3.1.
The type C on the Nokia N1 is combined with USB 2.0 which isn't powerful as we need it. What makes USB type C a future proof is the new USB standard the USB 3.1.
USB 3.1
The data transfer speed of USB 3.1 is 10Gbps which is double that of USB 3.0 at 5Gbps.The power capabilities have also been bumped upto 5 amps (5000mA) and up to 100W of power which is much more than USB 3.0's 900mA for up to 4.5W of power. This means that this will be able to support large devices like projectors and monitors in that small size. We need not have any different ports to handle different devices like HDMI, VGA etc. This means that we can plug all ports LIKE HDMI, VGA etc to a single type C port without any hassle.
This means that many future devices will have this USB type C, but it may not be the only port as many old devices still have older USB standard. The type C is backwards compatible with older USB standard but you may need a connector as they are physically not compatible.
USB type C is just the small shape that is capable of large amount of data and power efficiency if only combined with latest is 3.1 standard, otherwise it will only have the advantage of reversibility and not much.
