MediaTek unveils two new 64-bit chipsets for tablets

Mediatek, the SoC vendor that caters to a huge number of Tier - 2 manufacturers has today unveiled two tablet oriented SoCs. The two SoCs are MT8163 and MT8736, last month we saw MediaTek launching two new chipset family Halio X & Halio P which are top performers from Mediatek and are supposed to stand out in the race against Snapdragon & Exynos.

Both the SocS have the same configuration except that MT8163 is meant for tablets with Wifi connectivity whereas MT8736 is meant for tablets with cellular connectivity and thereby includes a cellular modem. The CPU of both the SoCs come in a quad-core Cortex A53 configuration.

The Cortex A-53 has become a standard in new SoC launches by Mediatek. However the details get interesting when it comes to the GPU. Generally Mediatek has used ARM's Mali GPU for low end SoCs and Imagination's Power VR GPU for mid to high range SoCs.

This SoC is rumored to include a GPU from AMD as speculated from GFX Benchmark listings. An AMD GPU will be a industry first amongst ARM based SoCs. However it remains to be known how true this information is. We will keep you updated on this.
