Alibaba.com to accept payments through Selfies

Recently, we have seen many firms taking interest in Mobile Payments considering the ease of use it affords to customers. Apple, Samsung, Google all have rolled out their own Mobile Payment services which you can use to make online purchases thorough your smartphone. Now Alibaba brings in an innovative mobile payment service called "Smile to Pay" which lets you pay by taking a Selfie.

Today, Alibaba Founder Jack Ma unveiled this new service which is based on Facial Recognition technology. He showcased it at the CeBit conference in Germany, and demonstrated it by clicking on the Buy button for an item on Alibaba website, after which the facial recognition program turned up. The front camera was enabled and the software was able to recognize Ma, and once it did, the payment process was completed.

Ma, who is the Chairman of the Alibaba Group said, "It's not the technology that can change the world, it's the dreams behind the technology that change the world," and added that his dream was to help small enterprises sell on a global market. He said that this technology would elimiate the need of password-based authentication and offer greater convenience to the customers.

Smile to Pay would be first released in China. There was no word however about a global roll-out of the service on AliExpress website. In September last year, the Hangzhou-based company raised a massive $25 billion on the NYSE, making it the biggest IPO in history.
