Memory bug in Android 5.1 on Nexus 5

Google has started the roll-out of Android 5.1 recently and it brings in some useful performance updates such as HD Voice capability and dual-SIM support. However, one major Memory leakage bug has been identified that affects the Nexus 5.

Threatpost reported an issue relating to a Memory bug and cites AOSP website which indicates that the issue is widespread. In some instances, users have apparently experienced issues launching apps and seen apps randomly restarting, often without opening or changing any application. The most prevalent issue users have witnessed has been a massive surge in memory usage. A user on the AOSP forum reported that the system sometimes took upto 800 MBs of RAM, but surprisingly the phone speed wasn't affected and there was no restarting of apps. Some others experienced lag in apps such as Gmail, while some noticed app crashes and a system crash as well.

Google has apparently already fixed the bug, but the fix hasn't been pushed yet. Threatpost reports that the RAM issue had been documented by Google and moved from a “new bug" to a “future release” status, and we can expect the update soon.

So if you're on a Nexus 5, you might want to put off updating to 5.1 for the time being.
